A mom in my hospital had a very "sleepy" baby and the Nsy RN was anxious
that baby feed NOW. Baby had BF'd well in L&D, but pref'd to sleep for a
while. 6 hours had passed since that first and only good feed. Glucose
check was 78 after the L&D feed, but at 6 hours was 74. RN says, "but it's
falling!"

Baby was not willing to wake up and root, but would smack his lips a
little. And mom could easily hand express colostrum. I had her "drip feed"
baby at breast for 5 mins, at least hourly. Two hours and two drip feeds
later, the RN asked if baby fed yet. I explained. She said that's NOT a
feeding and insisted on doing another glucose check. It was 76! After
another drip feed, baby became proactive, latched and nursed. Diapers were
WNL.

Things work well when mom is willing to work with baby, keep him in arms
and "in the restaurant", instead of leaving him tightly bundled in the crib
waiting for him to cry for hunger.
