I found a study from Child Development called, "Maternal DHA and the
Development of Attention in Infancy and Toddlerhood by J. Colombo, K.N. Kannass, D.J.
Shaddy, S. Kundurthi, J.M. Maikranz, C.J. Anderson, O.M. Blaga and S.E.
Carlson (volume 75, Issue 4, 2004) that discusses maternal levels of DHA. I
haven't read it yet. But I do know that S.E. Carlson has two patents on DHA
compositions from egg yolks for use in reducing the incidence of necrotizing
enterocolitis (patent #'s 6080787 and 6306908). Abbot is the assignee to these
patents with the US Government having "rights" to this invention because these
patents are the result of grants from the US government (NICHD and National Eye
Institute) and also funding from Ross. Of interest is a listing of possible
sources for this product--one being genetically modified oil-bearing plants. The
US government seems to be supporting genetically engineered sources for
infant formula. One might think that funding might be better spent in encouraging
breastmilk for infants at risk for NEC. But I suppose when ya have rights to
an invention, ya have an investment to protect.

But if anyone on this list knows of research on DHA levels around the world
that isn't funded by those who have patents or funding from Martek or Mead
Johnson, I'd love to see it.
