"Hello all,
I saw a mom today (permission to post) whose baby (2 weeks old) had only
gained 3.2 ounces in the past 7 days. I examined the baby's mouth and he
has a very tight labial frenulum. I don't think there was a posterior
tongue tie, and the palate was normal. But the labial frenulum was very
tight and after the mom nursed, she had a significant compressed nipple, in
a line. She said the most pain was at the top lip. The baby is now two
weeks old, but in the early days, this had caused significant nipple trauma
and the mom reported cracked bleeding nipples."

Perhaps a ped. dentist can help with this. A couple of ENT's around here, who do not use laser, have told moms it has to be done with a gen. anesthetic. Haven't found one yet that will treat. Moms here end up going to NY to see Dr. Kotlow. Crying shame, IMHO, that families have to go through this - driving 5 hours or longer to get properly treated.

And maybe look again at ptt. Working with three moms in the same situation. All 3 babies with tight labial fren. also have ptt. One is, as Cathy W G describes, a "sneaky tt" ... and submucosal so no obvious tissue to release... With one of the moms, releasing tt made enough of a difference that lab. fren. can be held off on. Other two have yet to be seen.

lowmilksupply.org as a list of surgeons who will treat tt.. perhaps they would also treat lab. fren.

Celina D, LLLL, IBCLC, (recently assessed with tt, sufferer of tight labial frenulum until it self released when I fell on a handlebar at age 8 - Mother of 4 daughters, at least one with tt and all 4 with tight labial fren.. who suffered horrible tooth decay in spite of my efforts to clean well - No wonder my mother didn't have enough milk for me! Does my frustration with the ignorance around this come through?!)
