Thanks for your response, Valerie.  Under the circumstances you portray, I
agree. Healthy full-term babies shouldn't be separated from their mothers at
birth.
The hearing tests in our hospital are done just prior to discharge and are
done in the mother's room, often with her holding the sleeping baby (because
they stay asleep better).  I can't imagine why hearing tests would need to
be done immediately after birth, since it won't change anything to wait
until later.
