I need to ask for information on how those of you working in NICU's
prepare fortified formula and breastmilk. It has been suggested that the
nurses in our unit should wear gown, gloves, masks, and hair bonnets when
preparing feedings.  Do any of you out there actually don all that
equipment every three hours to fix feedings, or even every 12-24 hours
when preparing a large batch? It seems like overkill to me, and I don't
want to make it any more difficult for the nurses who are trying to be
supportive of our breastfeeding mothers.  I know it is important to make
sure that we are doing everything possible to prevent contamination of
the "liquid gold". Some of the questions I would like to pose are,
a)who does the fortification? ie RN's,LPN's tech's
b)what protective devices are worn? Do we really have to dress like we are
going to a C/S to fix a bottle of breastmilk?
c)are any of you doing checking of the numbers on the breastmilk with 2
nurses before feeding?
d)do any of you sterilize the pump parts for parents while they are still
in the hospital, or do you just instruct them to do this once they get
home?
e)are any of you using the Medela microsteam bags to sterilize pump parts
or haberman feeders in the hospital, and if so who is responsible for
doing this? How do you store them after they are sterilized?
