In the information gleaned from Hartmann lab research - it was noted
that branching of the ducts can occur in different locations around the
nipple, they are not evenly spaced and not symmetrical and not the same
on both breasts. Where fingers are placed can affect the "trap and
roll" mechanism that is used in hand=expression. Fingers placed "in
front of" the branching will block some milk during milk ejection and
push forward the rest. Remember, babies remove milk by a combination of
vacuum and minimal compression. This is way different than
hand-milking. My sister has a dairy cow that she hand-milked - recently
switched to a milking machine. She gets much more milk with the machine
than by hand. Also, after the calf has nursed, she can still get milk
with the milker. Humans are not exactly like cows, but there are some
similarities. Cows have large reservoirs behind the teat - humans do
not. There is usually a good scientific rationale why certain
procedures work. One of those concepts is that humans are not machines
with each piece stamped out just like the other! Humans have a strong
psychological foothold in the whole biological process - and that's
partly what makes us different from animals and why a lot of
"alternative" things can work without a good scientific explanation!

I second that...I fully believe there are "clinical" procedures and
then there are "things that work best for each individual"...

Just like personalities and people in general and every mother baby
dyad....with breastfeeding there is almost NEVER a "one size fits all"
answer to everything...especially when it comes to the problem solving
aspect of it on our end! :)

of hand milk expression-as learned in various countries and cultures.
The way I got a freezer full of breastmilk was entirely different from
anything mentioned or pictured on Lactnet. I just cupped one hand above
and one hand below the fullest part of my breasts and pressed inward. I
could get about
4 oz in a few minutes when it got going really well. My hands (or
fingers) were nowhere near my nipples or areola or where my daughter's
mouth would have been placed. It worked very well for me and there was
no tenderness anywhere and I got no plugged ducts.
