I have a mother of a four-month-old in my office today who can only eat
oatmeal, brown rice, plain broiled chicken and romaine lettuce. Other foods
create real problems for her baby.

This weekend, the family, which includes a lovely four-year-old, went to a
farm and picked fruits and vegetables and mom ate a leaf of chard. That night,
the baby had gas and much more mucus in her stool than usual.

I have known these smart loving people for four years and I know that the
older child can't eat a carrot (among countless others foods) without getting
cramps and blood in her stool. The second newborn had bloody diarrhea in the
first week when we decided to let Mom eat ad lib. It was terrible.

I will minimize the details and tell you that they are very diligent but that
Mom now has to broaden her diet for her own health. Obviously, formula is
not an option and I shudder to imagine this baby's reaction to something like
Neocate. The family history is not particularly impressive as far as allergic
and immunologic issues are concerned.

I would like to start the baby on a trial of digestive enzymes and do the
same for mom.

How do I do this and has it worked for any of the rest of you?

Jay Gordon
