Hi Everyone,

Looking for some help w/ a mom who is experiencing repeated plugged
ducts and mastitis. Permission to post.
Baby began sleeping through the night at 4 weeks, and mom experienced
her first plugged duct. She had a fever and chills, but was not treated
w/ antibiotics. Mom treated w/ heat and massage and plug resolved. She
then had a mastitis at 7 weeks, fever, chills, and was treated w/
antibiotics, and mastitis resolved. Since then she has had 10 more
bouts of plugged ducts, 6x she had chills, red streaks and flu-like
symptoms, but was not treated. 2 times total she was treated w/
antibiotics. She has only been treated w/ antibiotics if her fever was
over 101. She has been taking lecithin for 4 months w/o improvement.
She has no medical conditions that she is aware of. She takes vitamins
w/ iron, folic acid and calcium. Her baby continues to sleep through
the night. Baby is healthy and happy and weighs over 15 pounds at 6
mos. On examination nipples are intact, breasts soft, no plugged ducts
at this time.
Mom wants to continue nursing for at least 6 more months, but she is
becoming fatigued w/ these repeated episodes. Any thoughts on a
treatment plan?
