I was happy Diane Weisinger posted about the Breastfeeding Review article on
therapeutic use of long-shank, slow-flow bottle teats to help some babies
who breastfeed poorly transition to normal (i.e. breast) feeding. While I
have been saying this for some time, basing it on what I read in the
OT/PT/Speech Path. lit. and on my own out-come based experiences, it is good
to see people publishing. The trick is always to distinguish between normal
and not-normal infants. Then one tries to determine which part of the
suck-swallow-breathe cycle is dysfunctional, and what would best assist the
infant have successful feedings. If the infant can be protected from
developing aversive behaviors in response to traumatic feeding experiences,
and if the milk supply is well-protected, it has been my experience that
transitioning back to breast is not difficult if mother is merely patient.
