I am writing in response to the comment "before there were pumps there were hands." to that I say, "and before there were lights we had torches..."

I worked 50-60 hours per week in a management position 26 years ago while I was breastfeeding my son. I went to the bathroom every 1-2 hours to manually express my breast milk for him. I suffered through bruises on my breasts and cramps in my fingers to keep up with his demand while he played with the bicycle horn-style pump in the bathtub!

I was not a lactation consultant at the time nor did I know much at all about breastfeeding technique, but I became a fairly adept hand expresser. I sure wish I had the options that the pump companies give mothers now.

P.S. I became a stay-at-home mom with my 2nd son 4 years later and had no need for bottles or pumps!
