I have received several requests for information on the BLIS. As I posted
I have found it useful in some circimstances. My clients who used it are
firm supporters of the system.

The device is made up of rubber discs that are designed on a central shaft
(about 3/8 inches deep). The discs come in two diameters for different
sized nipples. There is a wider base that rests against the bra, while the
smaller disc rests against the mother's nipples. Mothers do not find them
uncomfortable. I have had no cases of plugged ducts or mastitis with the
use of the BLIS.

The pressure of the bra against the base puts pressure on the nipples
sufficient to stop leakage. This device is used with spacing of feeding
intervals on a given breast, ie using one breast for all feeds under x
number of hours. Also I recommend the use of groung sage in reducing the
supply (also parsley and peppermint if needed). I have added to my
protocol the full emptying of the breasts once or twice a day, as needed,
to prevent mastitis. I read about that recommendation and have found that
it does not prolong the over-supply problem but does prevent milk statis.

I hope that I have explained the design and use of the system adequately to
answer any questions.
