It's amazing that this thread has developed because I saw a mom with exactly
this problem on Monday. Her baby is nearly 4 mos old and mom and babe are
regulars at our well baby group (I don't usually talk to her because I
usually see the breastfeeding problems in another corner of the room and she
hasn't consulted with me since her baby was a week or so old). The reason
she consulted me this week was because of suddenly sore nipples and a
recent history of antibiotic use and vaginal yeast, so I gave her info on
dealing with yeast.

The other concern that came up, was the perceived low milk supply- and I
think it is actual. Mom is an RN and this is 3rd breastfed child. I think
she has been able to assess her supply and baby's behaviour (fussy at the
breast and going on and off-impatient for let-down) quite well. Mom has some
unrealistic expectations re this baby's behaviour and feeding activity. I
think she has kept to a 3 hour type schedule since the beginning and expects
the baby to be pretty content. As it turns out, the mom keeps a very busy
schedule of physical activity with baby in tow, and I don't think the baby
has much of a chance to sleep/rest during the day.

She said everything was fine up until 2-3 weeks ago when the baby started
feeding very frequently and continued doing so until recently. She described
it as a 2-3 week growth spurt. The baby's weight gain has been slow of late.

Until I read the similar posts lately, I had been thinking mom just needed
more down time and suggested she nurse babe in bed in the morning and again
in the afternoon before the others get home. However, now I'm wondering if
that will be enough. I will see her again next Monday and will discuss the
possibility of domperidone.

Lactnet comes through again.
