There is a strong movement in fields related to public health to effectively and openly address the role of racism and white privilege in the creation of racial disparities in health outcomes. While doing this is a naturally challenging experience, it is also ultimately profoundly positive as well as absolutely critical in today's increasingly diverse world. The only way to move toward truly serving all mothers well is to first take a brave look at why and how we are not doing so right now. Then with the conviction that changing ourselves and our institutions is both possible and essential, we can work together to create equity in breastfeeding support. LLL of Washington is one of three candidates in the running to earn the $5000 GOLD Star award. If we are fortunate enough to earn this award, we will be that much more able to engage in work to help  end racial inequities in access to breastfeeding support and in breastfeeding rates.
