Jennifer,
Yes, it is so tempting to say "I told you so" or something equally
unprofessional when a mom weans or doesn't breastfeed at all and
then baby has almost immediate problems with the formula. On the
few occasions when I have been in a position to respond, I have
tried to say something like, "It looks like your baby is one of the
ones that has a problem tolerating formula. We usually don't see
this problem when a baby is getting breastmilk. Would you be
willing to consider trying to reestablish your milk supply?" (Now
what I'm really thinking is more like, "What do you expect. Formula
is a lousy choice. Now would you do what you should have done in
the first place and nurse this baby?!") By putting it in terms of
her baby being "one of the ones with a problem", we're not pointing
the finger directly at mom and she may be more willing to make an
effort. At least with the next baby, if there is one, she may be
more likely to think in terms of making breastfeeding work. I know
this may be seen by some as pussy-footing around the issue or being
wishywashy, but if that's what it takes to get a particular mom to
listen rather than tune us out, then so be it.

Winnie
