Dear colleagues:

I'm pleased to let you know that my new article on sunlight deficiency,
vitamin D, and breastfeeding has been published. The reference citation for
the article is:

Good Mojab, C. Sunlight Deficiency: Helping Breastfeeding Mothers Find the
Facts. Leaven August-September 2003; 39(4): 75-79.

I hope the information in the article will help La Leche League
Leaders--and anyone working with breastfeeding mothers--help mothers make
more informed decisions regarding this complex, controversial and global
issue. As soon as the article is indexed on the La Leche League
International website, I will include a link from the publications page and
the vitamin D page of my website, Ammawell
(http://home.comcast.net/~ammawell).

I address five myths in the article:

Myth 1: "Vitamin D" is a vitamin.
Myth 2: Human milk is deficient in vitamin D.
Myth 3: All exclusively breastfed infants are at risk of vitamin D
deficiency.
Myth 4: Experts around the world agree that vitamin D supplementation is
the best way to prevent vitamin D deficiency in exclusively breastfed
infants.
Myth 5: It takes a great deal of sun exposure to avoid vitamin D
deficiency.

In response to questions I received since my last publication, I have
included more information on the availability of UVB based on various
factors, such as cloud cover, shade, altitude, type of ground surface, etc.

As always, I welcome feedback on my work. I am currently "no mail", so
please reply privately if you wish.

Sincerely,

Cynthia
