If someone mentioned this and I missed it, forgive me. I've read this
discussion on mixing up the milk to be given to premies but didn't hear
this solution mentioned. I think it would provide a high level of
safety yet not give moms the feeling that their milk was "contagious".
I recently heard Paula Meier speak and she described the system they use
at Rush which is quite effective in preventing milk mix-ups. They put a
small freezer at every bedside. The mother rotates the milk through and
they have some large freezers elsewhere to store the overflow. She
stressed that moms were given a lot of responsibility for their milk and
its storage, but that this added to the mother's sense of "owning" her
baby's recovery. It sounds like a very regimented but easy to manage
system. They felt the relatively inexpensive freezers were worth the
assurance that the milk couldn't be mixed up! An ingenious system, all
in all!

Marsha, who found the materials mentioned by Nancy Wight to be
invaluable, jobless though I am!
