Birth, like BF, is something that touches us deep in our souls, so our
feelings about it are STRONG. There are many ways to come into the world,
some less fun than others, some cheaper than others, some more undisturbed
than others. Regardless of how they arrived, babies deserve our best
efforts to help them get their intended food. It certainly never helps in
the individual situation to intimate to a mother that had her birth been
different, her BF problems might not have occurred. We don't know that; we
can speculate, but that's it, and the bottom line is, what is going to help
this mother and this baby, here and now?

The art of using science wisely involves knowing when to use which tools of
the trade. (That goes for us too!) It's always an individual decision,
hopefully one made after weighing all the relevant evidence as it impinges
on the case in question.

The discussion on the relative merits of different ways of being born is
teetering dangerously on the brink of getting personal, in this listmother's
opinion, not to mention the risk of it getting off topic if we are reduced
to arguing about CS vs. vaginal birth (or 'disturbed' vs. 'undisturbed'
birth). This is NOT at all to say that 'route of delivery' or 'style of
birth attendance', if you prefer, are taboo subjects. But keep it BF
related and don't get personal, y'hear?

There are organizations working to improve the quality of perinatal care for
mothers and babies; I urge everyone with strong feelings about birth to look
around and consider putting your activist energy to good use there.

Kristiansand, Norway, where I am now off to work an extra shift on the post
partum ward, as an extra midwife because we have 4 new CS mothers today
(avg. number of total births/day is 6) and need some extra hands to help
with BREASTFEEDING :-)
