Quick clarification of previous cry for help...
In my understanding, there is a difference between
"inverted" nipples and "retracting" nipples. I am not
trying to begin a debate on semantics, just trying to
understand terminology. An true inverted nipple
appears inverted, in varying degrees, on visual
inspection; when pinched (hate that word) or
compressed, it inverts further, pulling in toward the
chest wall. A retracted nipple, which I have also
seen labeled a "pseudo-inverted" nipple, looks everted
on visual exam, but retracts toward the chest during
the pinch test or latch-on. I have seen this
retracting in the absence of maternal edema and am
hoping to uncover some strategies for both prenatal
and post-birth management.
Thanks to all who have responded and to those who plan
to in the coming days!
Carole
