Marianne,

I heard Nils speak about a yr ago on the most important fact about sts;
during that first hour, and only during that first hour, important brain
wiring occurs with skin-to-skin contact. I believe there is info on this on his
 website and if not I'll look in the syllabus I have from the conference.
He showed that this is firm neuroscience and also had brain scans to show
what occurs also when baby is sleeping solitarily vs on mom, (from my
memory), that cortisol is released and negatively impacts usual growth hormones
released during sleep. I found his information so powerful and yet felt
saddened by the usual course of events post birth, my own included, except for
one home birth and even that wasn't "perfect." There were a couple of
other researchers involved with Bergman's studies, too. Be glad to pull out
the references if not available on his site.
