Hutt Valley Breastfeeding coalition has this year’s Breastfeeding
Photographic Arts Competition winners online. Check us out at
http://www.breastfeeding.org.nz
Next year we plan on creating a database of images that will be available
for health professionals around the world to use to promote breastfeeding.
The idea is to have the images in a database where people can look up say
African American and twins and multiple pictures would pop up. We are
working with Wellington Institute of Technology to try and sort this out as
a class project. If you would be interested in helping on this project we
would love the help. We would like to hold the competition again this year
but we need more global sponsors as we had to have some people turn down
their prize because it was too local (hair salon vouchers, movie passes).
If anyone has any contacts with non-formula linked companies who would be
interested helping to sponsor this sort of a project could you please let
me know?

The winning pictures represented are actually just a few of the 150
gorgeous entries that came in to the competition. 50 were selected and
were displayed in two of our local malls during world breastfeeding week
(we stretched ours to two weeks). I was waiting for the you know what to
hit the fan with public outcry but it didn’t. In fact the most common
comment was that it was excellent and that we should do things like this
more often. Surprise, Surprise. We even had the minister of Health and the
Minister of Women’s affairs involved in the project. Quite an exciting
time, not quite sure what we are going to do next year though to top it.
