I need help for a mother with a 34 week premie who has a seizure disorder and
is on Depakote and Neurontin. She initially started pumping, but was told
this week that she should not breastfeed because of the medications. I looked
them up in Tom Hale's book and it sounds like it is the Neurontin (Gabapentin)
that is the problem. She is on 800 mg. TID, which has been increased since
delivery. Her Depakote dose is 750 mg. in the am and 1000 mg. in the pm.
Both the neurologist and the neonatologist have told her that she should quit
pumping and she has already decreased to every 6 hours.

Is there any new information on this drug? Could her milk level be tested?
Any help (quick!) would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris Lundberg, RN, IBCLC
