I was appalled to see a "group pumping" scenario. Does this really

happen anywhere?

Yes, in Norway. I've visited two major hospitals in the Oslo area where
they have a pumping rooms next to the NICU area. The rooms are also
fitted with some sort of movable screens to allow mothers for more
privacy, should they feel the need for it.
