Hi, All: Since an important component to helping a mother enjoy a successful
breastfeeding experience is building up her confidence and empowering her, I
have hit upon a really cute idea. I often found myself telling a mother that her
baby gets a gold star that day because he was the best nurser on the unit, I
decided to take the idea a step further. I found a package of gold star
stickers of the same type I used to receive on my papers at school when I did
the work well and carry them with me on rounds.
The moms are so thrilled that their baby has earned a gold star for good
breastfeeding! I peel a star off and put it on the baby's crib card in front of
the mother. I was leaving a room today as the mom's visitors were arriving
and I heard her proudly telling them that her baby had gotten a gold star for
breastfeeding!
Many of the moms are into scrapbooking and will take the crib card home with
them for the baby's book. When she looks thru the book later with her "baby"
and the "baby" asks why there is a gold star on the crib card, she can tell him
it was because he was so good at nursing.
I usually do give out more than one (but not everyone necessarily gets one)
each day but we do not have any issues with some moms feeling inferior
because we have all private rooms, so there is no competition.
