Laurie,
IMO mother-to-mother support via LLL ABA etc is peer support, there are just
different levels of training and different ways the contacts are made
depending on the program. I've had a fair look at the research in this area
and it's really really important when you look at these studies to look at
just what sort of training peer counsellors are given. Some like LLL/ABA
counsellors get really good training...in some of the studies published in
this area the training was 3hrs or less! In general studies have found that
professional input positively impacts the initiation of breastfeeding but
not exclusivity of bf or duration of bf and peer support positively impacts
duration of exclusivity of bf but not duration overall....I think that this
latter is an abberation and that the issue ot training and creation of a
"culture of bf" via peer support groups has not been sufficiently examined.
Certainly it gels with my research that long term breastfeeders (ie bf
children 2+years) have often has significant input from groups like ABA.
