I don't know about official guidelines from ACOG, etc, but...when I was about
38 weeks pregnant with my 2nd (now 3 years old), my doctor offered me an
induction when I mentioned that my husband was due to go to sea (Navy) 3 days
after my due date.  I said 'no thanks'.  I had just spent the better part of
2 months on bed rest due to an incompetant cervix.  There was no way I was
going to have her born any sooner than she wanted to after working so hard to
keep her where she belonged!  She was born 2 days before my due date.  My
husband was complaining bitterly that I was 'never going to go into labor".
He was very concerned about missing the birth.  I very angrily told him not
to mention it again, at all, ever (you can all probably imagine the
conversation!). I get up to go to the bathroom (again which he complained
about--you're going again?...) and my water promptly broke all over the
bathroom floor!  Abby was born 3 hours later.

I had a friend whose son was born via scheduled induction about 2 months
after Abby. The woman I mentioned in my post for information about meds is in
Israel so things may be different there.
