Of all the mothers I've known who have exclusively expressed for over  
a year (some for 2 years, and one amazing mother for more than 5  
years - we all know who she is!), only one that I can think of  
routinely uses hand expression. (I encourage all to learn and  
practise it, however, if only as an emergency measure.) Just as with  
mothers, lactation supporters' experience varies.
