I just read a recently published book called "How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm." Written by Mei-Ling Hopgood, an American expatriate living abroad in Argentina, it is a well-researched book discussing the topics we so often debate here in our forum. It discusses the highly variable ways babies and children are parented globally and why that works out just fine as long as parents are consciously and conscientiously parenting. There are a few brief mentions of breastfeeding, but it is NOT a book about breastfeeding. It touches on everything from family sleeping arrangements, types of solids fed to babies and toddlers, babywearing, family dynamics, and many more, including my personal favorite, why non-American children behave so much better in restaurants, even at 10 p.m. It is a book after our own hearts because it is referenced and thorough, non-judgmental and anecdotal, and just plain interesting due to the background of the author. Many, many references to tribal life and the family groups we often discuss in the breastfeeding realm, such as the !Kung! Thought you would all enjoy this one!
By the way, Eskimos keep their babies warm exactly the way you were already thinking :) Except they are worn on the back instead of the front!
