I think Barbara Wilson-Clay is right on the money with her concerns about
jumping on any new equipment or technique without careful assessment.
One of the benefits of cup feeding in third world countries was the
relative ease of cleaning over bottles. Each environment may need to
make it's own risk-benefit determination, and indeed, each individual
mother-infant dyad deserves no less.
I have a problem with carved-in-stone protocols. I prefer to
look at the dyad, look at the deficits and strengths they have, look at
the specific goals, then choose an intervention. Then re-evaluate and
change strategies as both partners gain skills that were lacking.
Whenever we get too dogmatic, especially in the lack of objective data,
we are practicing on faith, not science.
Just my humble opinion.
