Jo-Anne,

My mother had breast cancer and because of that I am considered high risk.
A year after my third child was born, I went for my yearly examination. I
told my obgyn that I was breastfeeding, so he told me that I was indeed at
high risk of developing breast cancer because of my family history, but that
the mammogram should wait until I weaned....and I asked: what if I wean in
about four years? (my son is about to turn four and we are still nursing)
He was shocked. I then went on and told him I was an "expert" on the
subject (my body, my breasts), to go ahead and give me the order for the
mammogram and that I would talk to the radiologist about my dense tissue.
This person is the head of Obstetrics of a very prestigious private Hospital
in Madrid, and I was the first pregnant breastfeeding woman he had ever seen
(he is over 60), and the first breastfeeding woman he had attended that had
a mammogram. (Spain, 1997) I had another mammogram last year (shortly
before turning 40) with, of course, another doctor. As per my experience
with friends (one of them suffering from premenopause breast cancer) and the
mothers attending my LLL meetings, this question is still not addressed by
obgyns here.
My mother in law in Norway was asked about the duration of each of her
lactations (she had six kids) before her first mammogram.(Norway, 1982)

Hope everything goes well. Warmly,

Lavinia, LLL Madrid
