As a NICU lactation consultant, I've been working with insurance
companies to supply breast pumps for the last few years for my NICU
moms. It's exciting how the affordable care act will cover pumps, but
it's important to realize that most, if not all, plans will require a
mom to get a pump from a DME provider. For that reason, we've decided to
stop our pump retail business in our hospital and just continue the
rental station. I think we will see a greater increase in the number of
moms willing to rent pumps to initiate lactation in a problem situtation
when a free pump is coming from the insurance. I've seen our rental
station volume double or even triple in the last two years I've started
getting the free pumps for moms. It is very important for a retail store
to not imply that a mother will receive coverage under the affordable
care act for supplies purchased. The insurance companies are negociating
with local and national DME providers in record numbers to provide this
service for moms and will not reimburse items purchased privately in
most cases.
