Susan said,

<<A fellow nurse told me about a client of hers that was not able to
breastfeed her first baby because there were no openings in her nipple.
Apparently she had produced milk and was engorged after birth but no milk
at all, even drops, came out.>>

My first client with this was just over a year ago -- severely inverted
nipples for which we could get out one drop at a time. Milk came in --
horrendously engorged for several days. Used the Medela Classic to pump, and all we got
was very edematous nipple tissue pulled into the pump flange -- I have
photos....poor, miserable mom. I can't find references to non-patent ducts, but I
know what we were working with.

Since then I have seen one other mom that I suspect based on history of her
first baby and then what was happening with this baby had NO patent ducts. She
wasn't my mom -- I was just consulting w/ another LC and saw her in the
hospital.

I've also heard now about one more mom that we suspect may have had the same
thing -- and now your mom. So I'm up to seeing two and hearing about two more.

Neither of my moms had ultrasound to "prove" my hypothesis....
