Last week Barbara Phillip MD, from Boston Medical Center, came to
Vermont for a Loving Support conference. She spoke at Pediatric Grand
Rounds at the UVM-affiliated Fletcher Allen hospital. (UVM is the
University of Vermont.)

Basically she told the story of becoming baby-friendly, but told the
story as a public health tale. When she discussed the benefits of
breastfeeding, specifically the decreased incidence of childhood
leukemia, I kid you not, the crowd GASPED. After the presentation the
head honcho pediatrician went directly down to the podium to talk to
her.

This was a powerful lesson to me. I am so used to knowing all these
things that I forget that the advantages of breastfeeding are NOT public
knowledge, not even for medical students. And yes I knew that before.

We decided we would offer our MD VLCA speakers for pediatric grand
rounds again next spring. That peer support and teaching works on all
kinds of different levels! And if you are in a position where you may be
able to engineer some of these sorts of opportunities, I'd say go for
it. We certainly don't have a plethora of pedis at our conferences, even
though we offer CMEs (thank you VCHIP). And I would highly recommend
Barbara as a speaker!
