Greetings all,
Just to reassure me that I am not whacko, what do you think of a breast
surgeon advising a mother to wean prior to surgery to remove a breast lump?
I have spoken with a mother, IDDM, in her 20's, with one nursing child
aged 2 1/2, whose lump has not been biopsied or aspirated, and whose HCP has
advised her to wean "for one week" prior to surgery to remove the lump. He
has impressed upon the mother that idea this will reduce the risk of
infection caused by cutting through milk ducts that are actively producing
milk. The mother has delayed 6 months to allow for natural weaning, but now
needs to decide what to do.
I think there are more options available, starting with a biopsy or a fine
needle aspiration to determine the nature of the lump more specifically. I
also think that weaning a 2 1/2 year old for one week will not "end" milk
production, but would it make surgery easier? Any thoughts or citations are
appreciated. Thank you.
