Thank you for your response, Jennifer.
The baby's tongue is fine, and mother never had nipple soreness (thank
God for small favors, I guess). High palate? Not sure since I do not do
an in-the-mouth assessment. I will mention this to the mom.
The mom and I have talked at length about mothering and yes, she would
describe this baby as high need. Her first baby was high need, as well.
This mom is very relaxed and giving, I don't really think high need is
all it is, but it does seem to be some part. It's a part that the mom
seems OK about. Just after talked with her the first few times I heard
James McKenna speak at a conference in Vermont. I had said to her,
joking, that at least two anthropologists I knew of would say her baby
was behaving like a regular human being (wanting to be in-arms and just
nip and nap nurse all day long). I mentioned to her about a sling and
skin-to-skin, also co-bathing and co-sleeping. Mom says that it all
makes really good sense.
Well, perhaps I used the word "lackadaisacal" in talking about the
baby's suck without thinking. I just meant, "less than optimal for an
unknown reason."
The cranio-sacral suggestion is interesting. I recently had a round of
this myself, for headaches and TMJ. I will mention this to the mom.
