STUDY: SMOKING DURING BREASTFEEDING DISRUPTS INFANT SLEEP
A study to be published in the September issue of the journal Pediatrics finds that maternal smoking while breastfeeding can cause sleepless nights for both baby and mom. According to the study, "Breastfeeding and Smoking: Short-term Effects on Infant Feeding and Sleep," finds that infants spent considerably less time sleeping during the hours immediately after their mothers smoked than when mothers refrained from smoking. The study's authors also note previous research indicating that nicotine has damaging effects on the developing infant brain, and that maternal smoking during early childhood increases the risk that the child will smoke during adolescence. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), more than 250 million women smoke tobacco worldwide. The abstract of this study is expected to be available online September 4 at http://pediatrics.aappublications.org.
