Thanks to Robyn, Yaffa and everyone else who responded to this, and all
in more or less the same vein! Clones, Anonymous? Since this problem kind
of slipped out at the end of a very long consultation for something
completely different, I didn't have a chance to question this mom
reaalllly closely, although I know that I brought up the point. I plan to
call her back and this time really put her on the griddle. I am quite
sensitive to these very points: (1) I certainly noticed
myself that my breasts softened considerably about 2 1/2 mo into bf, but
for some reason, I kinda took it in stride. I guess in those days I was
more of an optimist than I am now..... (2) My kids were manic feeders at
3 mo growth spurt time (especially Micha, now 19. I have a picture of him
at 3 1/2 mo, you'd think that this was 2 basketballs, top one smiling. He is
now almost 6 ft and weighs only a bit over 60 kilo. Sigh.) (3) In Israel,
moms have paid maternity leave for 3 mo, and most often will return to
work just when the growth spurt kicks in. I have this theory that most
secretly believe that the 3 mo maternity leave is a sign or something
that women were "meant" to wean at 3 months - this kind of "magical"
thinking is disasterous when the baby's appetite is increased by growth spurt.
My approach to this thinking is frontal - *I* bring it up and refute it
strongly. Doesn't always help, to my dismay. Just too many "coincidences"
for them. Again, thanks everyone. I'll try again, this time more closely.
If anyone has a different idea, I'm still here! The way the mom put
it, the milk was gone from one day to the next, but I too find it
pretty unlikely, just wanted to hear from the Wisdom of Cyberspace. Judy K.
