. She nursed her first child about 8 months & provided
>about 50% of his milk needs. Part of her doctor's protocol in this phase is pumping 4X per day for 30 min. What collective wisdom do you folks
 bring? > Thanks,

Sylvia:
I breastfed two adopted babies (now teenagers), the 2nd till 30
months of age. I believe that if the mom chooses to pump, which I did
with my first adopted baby, but not with the second, she should try to
pump more frequently - 6 or 7 times a day - but for no longer that 10
min per side. Longer pumpings might make her nipples tender before she
ever gets the baby to breast. In my case, my milk began to come in on
the 3rd or 4th day with baby #2, even though I had not pumped. The key
for me was frequent, lengthy nursings and no bottles after bringing baby
home. I used the Lact-Aid, which I much prefer to the SNS for long term
use, since it is comfortable and can be worn discreetly. With it I
could nurse in public just as well as with a "natural" born baby. Give
her my best wishes! Anne Stiller, RNC, IBCLE
