Recently there were some posts about concerns about farm raised
fish, particularly salmon. Since I live in the center of a huge farm raised
catfish area, I called and asked some questions. The levels of the omega 3
fatty acids are in the mid range of the amount of all fish so they do provide
a source of that. The catfish that is raised and processed here are grain fed
from grains raised here. The grain is sprayed with a herbicide at early
emergence and some pesticides are used to control certain insects. The FDA
measures the amount of pesticide residue before approving the grain for use
as a animal feed. The amount in the fish are also measured before approved
for release for sale for human comsumption. There is not mercury concerns
with farm raised catfish. It is a very good tasting fish (not fishy), low fat
( as long as you don't fry it in the traditional southern way) and a good
source of nutrients. The farms are owned and operated usually by Mennonite
families who eat lots of catfish, have lots of healthy pregnancies and
breastfeed for long periods of time. The manager of the processing plant has
twins who were breastfed for a couple of years.
