Oh my. On the edge of a worldwar here :-) The US metric systems differs from all the other systems in the world. Not only papersize. Also, for instance, notating of dates. And ofcourse Fahrenheit.
The international standard size of paper is A4, which is, to be exact 21,0 by 29,7cm. Or, for Americans :-), 8,3 by 11,7 inches.
(Note how we use the comma where the US uses a dot in numbers :-) ).

There is a system: A3 is double the size of A4, A2 is double the size of A3 - all the way up to A0. A5 is half the size ofA4, A6 is half the size of A5 - etc.

Now, to bring it back to breastfeeding. The margins on 'our' paper are not 'extra' length. They séém to be, as you compare them to the size you are familiair with. But to us they are normal, and the American sizes are unhandy and strange. So, if A4 is the norm - there is no extra :-)

Hi Pat
I have the same question - just from the other side. 😊
Our standard paper size here for documents is A4. US size is what we would call "Letter" size. We don't waste paper - we fill the page. We find ourselves having to adjust the US shorter pages to fit our longer ones.

Subject: I have a question....

Paper in the US is 8 1/2 inches x 11 inches or approx 21 cm x 27.5 cm.I find many articles and booklets in the rest of the world are about 8 1/2 wide ( 21 cm) x 11 1/2 " or 11 3/4 " (28.5 cm or 28.9 cm)My question - why is the extra length used for just lovely margins at top and/or bottom?

Personally I would either fill the page more or use shorter paper.
I spend a lot of time cutting pages from journals from around the world so they fit tidily in the US files.

I just really want to know why paper is wasted......Pat in SNJ
