Donated human milk is unquestionably the best and safest alternative when a
mother can't supply her own infant's needs. Supplying more donor milk and
making it easily available is a wonderful goal. I appreciate the enthusiasm
of those individuals who want to have milk banks promote their "product"
more widely, but I would remind everyone that milk banks (such as ours in
Austin) are non-profits. We are really struggling to find start-up capital
(all money donations welcome :) and have absolutely no budget to advertize
to hospts in our area or to educate other institutions in any systematic
way. Our board is comprised of very dedicated volunteers, and many of them
donate their time to write articles or speak publically to medical groups,
but there is a limit to the energy of even the most faithful volunteers. If
you have the idea that your local or regional milkbank needs to get the word
out, don't wait for them to do it -- become a volunteer yourself and HELP
them do it!
