Hello,

This is my first post to Lactnet. I am a lactation counselor working toward
my IBCLC (planning on sitting for the exam July 2004). I live in the
Dallas/Ft Worth, TX area. I worked with a private practice IBCLC for 3
years and have been working on my own counseling nursing moms for the last 6
months, since the LC I was working for moved. I do pump rental and sales,
home consultations and phone counseling. I have just started a nursing moms
support group as well. I truly love working with nursing moms.

The reason for my post today is that I am working with an adoptive mom (I
have her permission to post) who is nursing her 5wk old. She has never been
pregnant. She is currently nursing with a lact-aid 8 times per day. She is
not doing any additional pumping and is taking no drugs to induce supply.
Her original plan was to see if she could induce lactation with out the aid
of any medications, but now she is more open to the idea. The baby has a
great latch and nurses well with the aid of the supplementer. Her question
is whether she can expect to produce any milk without the aid of
medications. I have only worked with 2 adoptive moms prior to this and both
took reglan and began pumping prior to getting their babies. I would
appreciate any input you have as to whether it is possible to induce
lactation without meds or, if not, what protocol you have found to be most
successful. Thank you so much for your input.
