Andrea,
Good for you for providing all that evidence based info :) My son had a
hem of 9.8 at 11mo, which is borderline. I was borderline in pregnancy,
which of course affected his stores. I was told to supplement him
immediately with cereal (he ate no solids). Instead, I supplemented *me*
with an herbal decoction of blackstrap molasses, dandelion root, and
yellowdock root. After three weeks, my son's hem went up to 10.9. This
is something to consider when we see women with slightly anemic infants.
Supplemental drops may not be well absorbed and may interfere with the
absorbtion of iron in breastmilk, just making it worse. The herbal
recipe costs about a dollar for a month's supply, and is found in Aviva
Romm's Naturally Healthy Babies and Children, to which I have no
connection except that it sits on my shelf briefly between consultations.
