I just had to share this story with Lactnet. Last week a formula company
invited nurses, managers, educators in L&D and mother baby from all our area
hospitals to dinner. It was a very fine restaurant, 5 star, one of THE BEST in
our town. A friend who is IBCLC asked her "rep" if she could bring a friend
also an IBCLC. We had no intention of challenging the speaker we just
wanted to hear what they were going to say. I was granted an invitation as long
as I didn't mention where I worked,- WIC. We decided we would pay for our own
meals and take nothing. Upon arrival we asked (quietly) if we could have
separate checks. They looked at us like we were crazy, It was "free"???? but
OK as long as we sat together and put it on one credit card. The room was
prepared to seat about 50 to 60 and we think there was about 30 people there.
There was plenty of wine and shrimp cocktail.(Yum) we refused and sipped
water. They began to take orders, offering from about 5 entrees. When he came
to us we asked for a menu and were refused because it would be" too conf
using". We didn't want to order from what was offered because it would have been
very expensive, probably over $30.00 . So we got up and left went down
stairs and ordered a salad, no wine, and split a dessert. Some of the others at
our table (an IBCLC included) were at the restroom when we left and we wonder
what they thought when they came back and we were gone.
It makes me sick to think of the money spent that night to persuade health
care professionals to pitch their product.
