Thank You lactnetters for all the interest you have shown in my post.
It IS a very exciting project. Here are some answers to your
questions.

How did we convince the powers that be?
We presented our project as part of a global initiative (WHO and
UNICEF) to improve bf rates. We also quoted extensively from Scottish
office targets and compared the projected figures with local figures
We started at the top. Once the top people are convinced it is easier
to progress.

What were our activities?
The activities spanned a wide age group . Some were used for one age
group only , while others were used for two groups or all three.

It is not a problem to think of activities . Lots of other teaching
material can be adapted. I think it is important though to be clear
about the aim of the activity (eg to establish that ABM is not the
same as breastmilk). Some of the activities arose from things I read
on lactnet that set me thinking. We did a formula mixing and tasting session
with all age groups. A short role play was incorporated to highlight the
comparative convenience of breastfeeding. There are two small packages
available in the UK with photocopiable material, some of which we
found useful.

While some of the activites involved written work (eg a worksheet
based on a widely available booklet about breastfeeding- not by an
ABM company) others did not. One discussion centred around a lot of
photos of mammals suckling their young, another on promotional materials
produced my formula companies( A great one to get childrenthinking
about how and why advertising works). Litle ones were read children's books which
feature breastfeeding in a positive (but unobtrusive way)Facts and
quotes were posted around with accompanying questionaires, including
competitions.
Almost anything can be turned into a breastfeeding 'activity'.Even
while reading this you have probably thought of some more.(Please
post!)

Evaluations
Before the older children did our activities they were given a sheet with a
few simple questions, mostly multiple choice to answer. We tried to
find out about their attitude to public breastfeeding, exposure to
breastfeeding, their basic knowledge on the comparitive merits of
different ways of feeding babies.
When their activity hour was over all the children completed another
questionaire. Some of the questions were repeated, but worded to
see if they had changed their attitudes. Some tested whether they had
got the point of one particular activity and we also asked them
what they had enjoyed and why.
Children were not directed on answering these.

And Now . . .
We are in the process of writing all this up in far more detail as a report
which will be available by snail mail to anyone who wants a copy in a
few weeks.(Quite a few weeks - don't hold your breath!)
The group is also thinking of producing the whole thing as an
educational package, including worksheets, resources, etc which may be
available in the not so near future.
If any of you have done something similar or want to start something
similar please tell me about it. All the adults involved agree that it is
one of the most worthwhile ways to spend time in breastfeeding
promotion.
