I did the breastfeeding class for the Community college and it turned out
great. One student told me during the break that it was so fascinating that
she kept forgetting to take notes! I started with the Healthy People Goals
and asked why moms don't BF if we have set these goals and we know BFing is
best. The answers were the same that we all hear--it hurts, it's
inconvenient, Dad's can't help, Have to go back to work, etc. Then we
discussed why those excuses/misconceptions don't add up. I then had them
divide into pairs and list as many advantges of BFing as they could in 5 min.
I then asked who had 50, 25, 20, 15 etc. The longest list had 12 advantages.
I then showed them the list of 101 Advantages of Bfing and we discussed the
major ones. I discussed and then showed them a video with correct latch-on
and positioning. We ended with the three most common problems--sore nipple,
engorgement and milk supply concerns ( real and perceived).
I then taught Labor Support for about 30 minutes. Then for the "final" I had
them divide into groups of 4 to role play being 2 nurses, a pregnant woman
and a dad. They were to go through a mock labor and delivery, practicing each
stage, giving comfort techniques, position and breathing techniques etc. Then
the pretend mom had to "nurse" her pretend baby with the pretend nurses
giving instructions. They really enjoyed this and got into the roles easily.
One pregnant pretend woman even attempted to throw the pretend husband out
of the labor room during transition! At the end I discovered one pretend mom
nursing two pretend twins who she said she delivered vaginally, unmedicated
and was tandem nursing!!! They really enjoyed the role play and I think they
learned quite a bit.
I also did an inservice at a Private practice OB/GYN office on common breast
problems in the early postpartum period. None of the MDs came, only nurses.
They did ask several questions with the biggest question how to refer to me!
Next week I do a 3 hr talk on Assessment of the Mother/Baby Dyad in the first
14 days. This is for home visiting nurses. I am not doing powerpoint--only
using videos, discussion and ending with discussing assessment tools and
evaluating some samples of those.
Then the following week I am doing a 2 hour talk at a regional Meeting of
Health Dept staff nurses on the same topic.
Thanks to everyone who sent me ideas, and especially encouragement when I had
mentioned my talk schedule for the fall.
