My name is Jennifer Moss Corbin and I'm an IBCLC (2002) and a LLLL. I am
about a five year lurker and have learned so much for you all! Thank you!
Here's my situation: my MD, who has no kids but is young, asked me kind of
off the cuff (kind of kidding but not really) about a medication that his
female dog has to take for colitis. She is nursing a 8 day old pup and
the vet said - no breastfeeding. The MD really wants to put back to
breast as bottle feeding the pup is difficult and not going well. I told
him that the DVM info was probably from the drug company and that I would
check into it. (I'm working to slowly educate him about human
breastfeeding.)
The med is Flagyl and an L2 and is used in infants. The mother dog weighs
13 lbs and the pump weighs 1.5lbs. Is there any reason that this pup
should not get her mothers milk? Is there anywhere that I could get some
more information on drugs as it related to dogs?
Thank you for your help with my somewhat OT request.
Jennifer
