Hi Pam,
With very rare exception; if a baby can feed from a bottle, it can feed from
the breast!
There have been numerous published studies documenting this, try Paula Meir's
research or search under "oxygen sats, feeding types and premies"
Your unit has much to learn as this is "pretty much" the accepted standard of
practice in this area. I say "pretty much" because although most units may
claim to "know" this in theory, there are many who still hang on to the older
ideas, ie. "bottle is less tiring" etc. but masquerade it with "Mom wasn't
available" etc.
If you would like to read a case study of a baby cup fed for 5 wks before
transitioning to the breast, check out my article in the current "Medela
Messenger" @ medela. com.
Good Luck!
