The guideline of 1 FTE per 1000 births leaves out an important
parameter. What percentage of moms breastfeeding is assumed? If
80% are breastfeeding it would certainly require about twice the
coverage as if 40% are breastfeeding. Another factor is the type of
services offered. We have 1.8 for 2400 deliveries a year and 80%
initiation. We are able to see all moms as inpatients, operate a
warm line, a weekly support group, bimonthly classes and outpatient
visits as needed. However, this does not allow us enough time to do
phone follow-up (initiated by us) to all the breastfeeding moms
(something we would really like to be able to do). We rely on them
to call us if they have problems, or we will initiate follow-up if
there were specific concerns before discharge. In other words, to
provide all the services we would like to be able to provide would
require at least 2 or even 3 FTE's.
Winnie Mading, in hot Wisconsin - pleased we can do as much as we
do, but always wishing we could do more!
