I repeat that it is not only nurses who have adopted this harsh way of
latching the baby on - there are lots of LCs and IBCLC's who also recommend
it. As Diane W always says - it’s a matter of language - and we are not
really the ones to latch the baby on. It is the baby's job to do the latching.
We just have to enable him to do it the best he can - and interfere as
little as possible with his natural ability to do this. "
Hello again, all,
Ellen thanks for your feedback. After reading the BF Report Card, and
finding out that we in NY are zero for five on those 5 indicators, I guess it's
helpful to know others are seeing the same issue. At our recent NYLCA
meeting/workshop, Dr. Beebe talked about the "agency" of a baby ( in another
context but I am nothing if not tangential in my shifting of knowledge into
ever new applications, probably why I get into so much trouble...:). As you
said, the baby is the agent of latching his/herself on to mom's breast. We
think, from before, and even so many now, that it is mom's job to latch the
baby on, IBCLCs are coming over to "fix the latch" ( yes Kathy Lilleskov
I hear you cringing/screaming from here...:), etc. We are controllers, not
watchers, facilitators, responders, gentle guiders. It's, as Diane W said,
our language that can chip away at the ugly building we call MOM MAKES BABY
BREASTFEED, and building up something more like "here is how we move into
a lovely breastfeeding relationship between a mother and her breastfeeding
baby who gets so many needs met during one 'simple' activity"....

Peace,
Judy
