Hi Pam,
We are seeing the opposite problem here in NYC - we have several
physicians who tell mothers NOT to pump when they are having
breastfeeding problems. One mom I am working with is only getting drops
of milk after a very bad start and following this advice in the crucial
first 2 weeks. Another mom is painstakingly rebuilding her supply after
this same practice told her not to pump if her baby (with a genetic
syndrome and macroglossia) breastfed for 5 minutes. This little one
gets only a few cc's in 5 minutes!

We do sometimes see moms with mondo oversupplies from pumping in
addition to effective breastfeeding.
Sigh. When will people learn to make appropriate guidelines for tool use?
